The Fold is a women-focused making and cultural space within 520 Sauchiehall Street, designed around ideas of visibility, connection and creative exchange. At the centre of the project is a 12-metre vertical void that cuts through the existing building, creating a clear division between public and maker spaces while maintaining a visual connection between them. Public spaces provide a platform for exhibiting and celebrating work, while the spaces beyond are dedicated to making and collaboration.
Femininity is explored throughout the project as both a spatial and material language rather than a fixed aesthetic. Softer forms, colour and tactile finishes are deliberately set against the building’s angular geometry and raw industrial materiality, creating moments of contrast throughout the interior. Circulation wraps around and crosses the central Fold, connecting workshops, social spaces and collaborative areas while allowing the activity of making to remain visible across the building.
